Deck Planking

Parallel to the covering boards, 1/4" thick by 1 1/8" wide cypress planks are sprung to the inside curve of the deck. These are glued down to the subdeck with epoxy and the carefully maintained 1/16" seams are payed with epoxy thickened with graphite powder. On centerline forward, there is a thicker king plank and aft the port and starboard planking converge in a herringbone pattern. One favorite detail is the raised diamond shape plank surrounding the rudder post. Although beautiful and distinctive, these narrow sprung planks and raised sections served important structural functions on the original boats - adding overall strength and reinforcement to highly-loaded areas. Once everything has been sanded smooth the deck is coated with UV-resistant clear epoxy and then a 2-part matte-finish varnish.
